MLB punishes CC Sabathia for Rays episode

BOSTON — CC Sabathia’s decision to throw at Tampa Bay’s Jesus Sucre on Thursday- and admit to it- could cost him more than the $500,000 bonus he may not get.

The lefty was also suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount, MLB Chief baseball Officer, Joe Torre, announced Saturday. He will appeal the decision. Sabathia is not in danger of missing any postseason games, since any punishment won’t be enforced until 2019.

Sabathia was retaliating for Rays’ right-hander Andrew Kittredge throwing a 93 mph fastball behind Austin Romine’s head earlier in the game. Kittredge received a three-game ban for his actions and has not decided whether he will appeal.

Warnings were issued to both teams after Kittredge’s pitch in the top of the sixth of the Yankees’ 12-1 win at Tropicana Field.

Sabathia, who had allowed just one hit in five innings — and was just two innings shy of reaching 155 for the season, which would have triggered the bonus, drilled Sucre in the leg with a 92-mph cutter with his first pitch of the bottom of the sixth.

He was immediately tossed and before he left the mound, Sabathia pointed into the Tampa Bay dugout and shouted, “That’s for you, bitch.”
