The German playmaker was dropped for Arsenal's 2-1 victory over Bournemouth last weekend after Emery voiced concerns over his physicality.
And Wright backed the Spaniard's management decision to leave the £350,000-a-week man on the sidelines.
Wright told The Times: "Unai Emery’s words were admirable.
"What is great is Unai has recognised that and made a decision.
"It sends a message to the dressing-room that you need to pull your weight. It is a worry for Ozil."
Wright is not the only ex-Gunner to express concern, echoing Martin Keown.
Ozil has featured 12 times for Arsenal this season, scoring four goals for the club.
And Wright feels a fully-engaged Ozil remains crucial to the club's success going forward.
He said: "He is our best player, you want him enthused.
"Arsenal can’t afford to have a player of that calibre on the bench as Henrikh Mkhitaryan is trying to find form. That is too much for Arsenal to carry."
