Meet Josh Stowers, the speedy prospect Yankees got for Sonny Gray

The Yankees pushed hard to get rid of Sonny Gray, and in the process, added a new prospect to their pipeline Monday.

With a third team involved, center fielder Josh Stowers ended up being the return. The Yankees got minor league second baseman Shed Long and a compensatory draft pick from the Reds for Gray and minor league pitcher Reiver Sanmartin, then flipped Long to the Mariners for Stowers.

Seattle’s second-round pick (54th overall) in 2018, the 21-year-old Stowers hit .260 with a .790 OPS and 20 stolen bases in the Low-A Northwest League last year. He was the Mariners’ No. 10 prospect, per MLB.com.

The 6-foot-1, right-handed hitting Stowers played collegiately at Louisville, where he hit .407 in the NCAA tournament as a sophomore before boosting his draft stock in the wooden-bat Cape Cod League. As a junior for the Cardinals, he hit .336 with an OPS of 1.036 and 36 steals while earning D1Baseball and NCBWA All-America third-team honors. He was also named to the All-ACC Academic team in 2017 and 2018.

As a bonus for the Yankees, Stowers does not yet have to be added to their crowded 40-man roster.
