Manchester United star David De Gea refusing to follow Luke Shaw's example and commit long-term future to club

United have triggered a one-year option on De Gea’s contract to keep him until the end of next season when he could leave on a free.

But as yet the Spanish No 1 has not accepted a new £275,000-a-week offer.

United yesterday confirmed a £190,000-a-week package with Shaw until 2023, with the option for a further year.

And England’s left-back said: “If you look at my situation in the last year or year and a bit, you would have thought this would have kind of been impossible.

“But I worked hard and wanted to make sure my future was here and to help this club so I’m really happy.”

Shaw, 23, who moved from Southampton in 2014 for £33million, has experienced a rollercoaster relationship with Jose Mourinho.

United’s boss, who has publicly slammed the player in the past, said: “Luke fully deserves this contract. He understood his development process, he has worked really hard at every level.

“Luke is still young and is improving all the time and he must feel very proud of himself. I am delighted we are keeping such a talented young English player with a bright future ahead of him.”

Shaw has been one of the few highlights in a tough start to the new season for Mourinho.

And he added: “I knew how important this season was going to be especially the start of it coming in my last year.

Now executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who has been in talks with De Gea’s agent, Jorge Mendes, will step up the club’s efforts to resolve the situation.
