Manchester United news: Jose Mourinho must make Paul Pogba and the rest 'feel special'

Top sports psychologist Steve Pope believes now is the time for Manchester United’s boss to climb through the window of opportunity opened by Paul Pogba and his team-mates.

Or risk having the Old Trafford door slammed in his face.

In a case study for SunSport, Pope advises the Special One to start making his players feel special about themselves.

Just like he did during the half-time crisis meeting with his side trailing 2-0 against Newcastle.

He took Pogba’s advice, changed tactics and personnel, and United roared back to win 3-2 with the World Cup winner taking a starring role.

Blackpool-based Pope, who works with many Premier League clubs and star players, said: “That moment should tell Mourinho everything about the way forward.

“The basis of all group therapy is that you tell the members of the group to take responsibility for their actions.

“That is exactly what happened at half-time in the Newcastle game. The players reflect the manager’s attitude.

“If Mourinho has got players who are not functioning properly he has to ask himself: Am I functioning properly?”

Pope also works as a life counsellor and added: “The whining, the whingeing and the complaining has gone on and on.

“But it cannot go on much longer and unless he changes it will cost him his job. He is at a point in his career where he is at the crossroads.”
