Manchester United 'never needed' Alexis Sanchez and 'hasn't performed yet', blasts Paul Scholes

Sanchez was nabbed from the clutches of Manchester City in January when United agreed a £505,000-a-week deal with the then Arsenal star.

Since then he has proved to be a disaster, struggling to find any of the form which made him such a major player for the Gunners.

And United legend Scholes is as puzzled about what has gone wrong as he was about why Jose Mourinho wanted to even sign him in the first place.

He told Five Live: "We all know the qualities he’s got – he’s shown them at Arsenal and shown them at Barcelona. Two big clubs.

"Barca are on of the biggest clubs in the world, one of the best teams in the world and he was great for them.

"It just hasn’t happened for him for one reason or another. Why? I don’t know.

"What he’s doing in training, what he’s doing behind the scenes, we just don’t know.

"It was a signing at the time I never thought we really needed, I thought that position was covered in Martial and Rashford.

"Obviously I thought he would bring quality to the squad but he hasn’t performed yet.
Whether he’s fallen out with the manager or not, I don’t know."

Scholes believes the 29-year-old is at least doing his utmost to revive his fortunes.

He added: "He looks like he is trying, again he looked like he was trying the other night.

"When you’re in a bad run of form, you’re confidence just – it goes.

"There’s times when you just don’t want to play, not don’t want to play, but you feel like you can’t kick a ball ten yards to another player.

"It might just take one goal, an ugly goal, a good pass to a player to score a goal and he might be off and running.

"I just hope he gets the chance to show his qualities because we know he has them."
