Raheem Sterling has explained why he has decided to start speaking out on poignant matters amid the fallout from Saturday’s incident at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have suspended four people from attending matches following allegations that racist abuse was directed towards the Manchester City forward.

Footage appeared to show a group of fans in the lower tier of the Matthew Harding Stand angrily shouting at Sterling as he went to retrieve the ball during the 2-0 victory for the home side. One of them allegedly shouted racial abuse at Sterling.

The England star later issued a statement on Instagram in which he said that he believed black players and white players were not treated equally by the media, including the Daily Mail and Mail Online, and that he believes this helps ‘fuel racism and aggressive behaviour’.

And, in an interview in the winter edition of The Glass Magazine, the winger stated that he believes it is important to speak out about big issues now in order to hopefully help others further down the line.

‘I’m about sharing so that stuff that has happened to me could help someone else as well,’ he said.

‘There was a time when I tried to hold stuff back but I know now that there is a 15-year-old boy just like Raheem, or a girl just like Raheem, that will go through these things and hopefully hearing these things from me and not keeping it to myself will help.

‘I’d like to know I could have helped someone else that is going through something similar. Not everyone is the same but I want to help them along their journey, that’s what I want to do.

‘I always think of the kids from the next generation, you know the kids from London or Manchester or wherever they’re from.’

Sterling has been praised for the manner in which he appeared to laugh off the vile abuse

Chelsea have released a statement saying they have suspended four people from the ground

RAHEEM STERLING STATEMENT

Raheem Sterling posted a statement on Instagram on Sunday morning addressing the incident at Stamford Bridge. It read:

‘Good morning. I just want to say I am not normally the person to talk a lot but when I think I need my point to (be) heard I will speak up.

‘Regarding what was said at the Chelsea game as you can see by my reaction I just had to laugh because I don’t expect no better.’

Sterling also said that he believed black players and white players were not treated equally by the media, including the Daily Mail and Mail Online, and that he believes this helps ‘fuel racism and aggressive behaviour’.

Sterling has grown to become one of Pep Guardiola’s most consistent players at Manchester City and has been lauded for his performances for the club.

The player went on to reveal that he owes his progression to being contented with life both on and off the field.

When asked about his future goals, in an interview which is understood to have taken place before Saturday’s incident, he said: ‘To be honest, to be able to keep improving as a football player.

‘I feel like I’m getting into a mode where I’m just happy with everything outside of football and that allows me to be happy on the field too.

‘I’m developing under a wonderful manager – a manager that helps everyone – and the team is evolving and I feel like I’m evolving now.’

The release of Sterling’s interview comes after the man accused of aiming racist abuse at him was named by MailOnline as Colin Wing, 60, from Beckenham.

Sterling said in the interview, which may have taken place before Saturday’s events, that his football is reaping the rewards due to his contentedness both on and off the pitch

The Chelsea fan was alleged to have called Sterling a ‘f***ing black c***’ and has since said: ‘I want to apologise unreservedly to Raheem. I’m deeply ashamed by my behaviour.’

Mr Wing says he has lost his job and his season ticket at Chelsea, after 50 years watching the club, and added: ‘Everybody’s got what they wanted.’

The married father-of-two, who lives in a £500,000 house and is believed to be a former BT manager, insists that he called Mr Sterling a ‘Manc c***’ not a ‘black c***’. Sterling is understood to have claimed to police that he heard racist language coming from the stands behind him.

Mr Wing said: ‘I’m deeply ashamed by my own behaviour and I feel really bad. But I didn’t call him a black c***, I called him a Manc c***.

‘I’ve been going to Chelsea for 50 years now and, because of where I sit, I’m picked up on the camera most weeks. If I had a history of saying this sort of thing I would’ve been caught by now.’

The footage of Mr Wing and Chelsea fans abusing the footballer has appalled millions and Sterling has been widely praised for the way he laughed in the face of the abhorrent abuse and how he has spoken out about the matter.
