Man Utd fans baffled by Jose Mourinho's starting XI to face Southampton as Anthony Martial misses out

In-form Anthony Martial, who has scored six in his last nine, has been dropped to the bench with misfiring Romelu Lukaku leading the line.

Amid an injury crisis Mourinho has started just one natural central defender in Phil Jones.

It has left Red Devils' supporters scratching their heads at the way the under-pressure Portuguese boss has lined up at Saint Mary's.

One fan's tweet, which has over 1,300 'likes' said: "Like if you just cried when you saw that line-up."

Another wrote: "And people wonder why we're only capable of finishing fifth max."

There is no room for Diogo Dalot to make his highly anticipated Premier League debut with Ashley Young starting at right-back.

Youngster Scott McTominay has also come in for a rare start with Marcus Rashford moved out into a wide role.

United, despite their struggle for goals this season, have a wealth of attacking talent left on the bench.

Fred, the club's £50million summer signing, is joined by Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard in what could be a do-or-die clash for both managers.

Mourinho explained of his decision to name Jones as his only defender: "He is the only one (fit defender).

"I would like to have Nemanja Vidic but I don't – I only have Nemanja Matic and he is a midfielder.

"Chris Smalling is out with a pain in his foot. Marcos Rojo only trained with the team this week and is ready to help out but not to start. Lindelof has an important injury. Eric Bailly is not available as he has a pain in his back.

"So the only guy we have is Phil Jones."
