London Marathon 2019 ballot – how do I apply for next year’s race, what date is it, and when is the entry deadline?

Plenty will make the decision – and perhaps regret it later – to take part in the 2019 race. Here's all you need to know about how to apply…

When is the London Marathon 2019 and how can I apply

The 2019 Virgin Money London Marathon will take place on Sunday 28 April 2019.

The ballot for the 2019 marathon has now closed but was open from Monday 30 April until 17:00 on Friday 4 May 2018.

Prospective runners were given five days to decide whether you want to take the plunge (or convince yourself to go through it all again).

It's a random draw, and entrants have to be at least 18 years old on the day of the race.

Applicants don't find out until early October, giving you five months to consider the decision – you'll only have to pay the entry fee once you receive a place.

You can also get in on the act by running for a charity, but there are only limited places and to secure a place you must approach the charity to see if they have space.

People can also qualify through the 'Good For Age Entry' where you must have run a full marathon in the same time or quicker than the times for certain age brackets.

Is there a cut-off point for applications?

A record 386,050 applicants from the UK and overseas registered for a ballot place in the 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon.

As many as 327,516 of those applicants were from the UK, up 73,586 from the previous UK applicant record of 253,930 for the 2017 event.

As incredible as this is, it does make it very difficult to get a place for the Marathon, and places have been known to fill up in less than eight hours.

When was the 2018 London Marathon?

The 2018 London Marathon took place on Sunday, April 22.

This year's event was  officially started by The Queen, who pushed the button from the grounds of Windsor Castle.

Her Majesty was beamed out on big screens across the race's three starting points in Greenwich Park.
