Liverpool fans convinced they got Jose Mourinho sacked with 'we want you to stay' chant

The Reds' supporters rambled snide chants calling on the Red Devils' board to keep the Portuguese coach in charge.

Mourinho was sacked in a face-to-face meeting with Ed Woodward at United's training ground on Tuesday morning.

The 55-year-old coach lost his job after a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Liverpool, placing the Red Devils 19 points behind Jurgen Klopp's men.

Mourinho's side allowed the Reds to have 36 shots on David De Gea's goal while attempting to test Alisson only six times.

And while Liverpool were punishing Mourinho for his ultra-defensive tactics, the roaring crowd at Anfield begged United's top brass to keep their coach.

And with Mourinho now gone, they think their "backing" could have played a part in the Portuguese's sacking.

Twitter user, @rxzwn, wrote: "Liverpool fans singing 'Mourinho we want you to stay' really did the trick lol.

While furious @Keba_MC added: "'Well done', Anfield… your chants about hoping the Special One 'staying' more or less got him sacked."

And @ScottShashua said: "The chants of ‘Don’t sack Mourinho’ around Anfield Sunday obviously played with the Glazers. We’ll sing a song for use Friday night at Wolves on who to bring in too shall we."

Liverpool fans might well regret their chants now as big changes are coming to Old Trafford.

Following Mourinho's sacking, Paul Pogba has reportedly abandoned his plans to leave United.

The Red Devils are also in search for a forward-thinking coach who can turn things around at the Theatre of Dreams, with Zinedine Zidane and Mauricio Pochettino topping the wish list.
