Liverpool duo Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez can create 'one of the all-time great Premier League centre-half partnerships', insists Martin Keown

Ex-Charlton youngster Gomez has been exceptional at the heart of the defence this season, displacing Dejan Lovren in the process.

And Van Dijk, a £75m capture from Southampton back in January, has established himself as one of the best defenders in the top flight.

Keown is convinced the duo can continue to improve, both individually and collectively.

Speaking on BT Sport he said: “It’s already a phenomenal partnership.

“It could be one of the all-time great Premier League centre-half partnerships.

"They are that good – they’ve got everything in their locker."

Manchester United favourite Rio Ferdinand also reserved special praise for the duo, who he says, along with goalkeeper Alisson, are critical to the Reds chances of securing silverware.

He explained: "That defensive triangle is massive for Liverpool in terms of winning trophies going forward.

"Van Dijk and Gomes have tremendous recovery pace and positional sense – and they're only going to get better.

"Van Dijk especially is at the stage of his career where he needs trophies.

"For me, Gomes and him are two of the top five defenders in the league."
