French rugby player, 19, dies after breaking neck on a tackle

A 19-year-old French rugby player died Wednesday night after breaking his neck on a tackle.

Nicolas Chauvin, a youth player for French club Stade Français Paris, fell into cardiac arrest after a tackle five minutes into Sunday's match against Union Bordeaux Bègles. Emergency responders spent nearly 20 minutes trying to revive Chauvin before transporting him to the hospital, according to Agence France-Presse.

Chauvin spent four days in the intensive care unit at a Bordeaux hospital and was pronounced dead Wednesday night, Stade Français Paris said in a statement. He had fractured the second vertebrae in his spine, which sent him into cardiac arrest and cut off oxygen to the brain, according to the club.

"All our thoughts are with the family of Nicolas, to whom all the members of the club send their most sincere condolences," Stade Français Paris said in the statement.
