Danny Welbeck still in hospital as Arsenal wait to discover full extent of horror injury

Welbeck was rushed to A&E last night minutes after he suffered shocking damage to his right ankle in the Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon.

And specialists want Welbeck to remain on the ward, until as long as Monday, as they try to determine just how severe the problem is.

The 27-year-old may have to wait for up to 72 hours before discovering just how long he is likely to be ruled out for.

But there are fears his season is already over – a major blow for the popular stiker who is out of contract in the summer.

An Arsenal statement said: "Danny remains in hospital and will continue to be assessed. A further update will be issued over the next 72 hours."

The fact the England forward is not being released is an indication just how serious the problem could be.

Simple bone fractures can be reset quickly by doctors, with patients being allowed to go home within hours of being treated.

But more complicated breaks sometimes cause damage with ligaments, or even require surgery to pin the bones back in place.

The less than conclusive news comes as figures within football clamour to send their best wishes to the Gunners star.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery took to Twitter to post his own message, telling the forward the club now have even more reason to take three points from their weekend clash with Wolves.

Emery wrote: "One more big reason to fight and win next Sunday. All the @Arsenal with you. Hope to see your smile and energy soon Danny!"

England team-mates Kyle Walker, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford all sent messages  on social media.

They were joined by former club United, while team-mate Mesut Ozil was quick to voice his shock at what he had seen.
