Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s other favorite sandwich is turkey, pickles and Doritos

Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s sandwich preferences are legendary at this point.

The retired NASCAR driver-turned-broadcaster occasionally grosses out the internet when he reminds everyone he loves banana and mayonnaise sandwiches. He grew up eating them, and, based on the replies he got one time he tweeted about these sandwiches, he guessed it’s a North Carolina regional thing.

But admittedly, Earnhardt says he hasn’t had one “in a long time,” perhaps because they’re not particularly healthy in general but also because he’s watching what he eats. Insisting while on his weekly podcast, the Dale Jr. Download, that he’s not on a diet, he talked about how he’s just counting calories.

Well, one of his fans submitted a question to the podcast asking when the last time he had one of these infamous sandwiches was, and he explained:

“I don’t eat the banana and mayo anymore, and here’s why. I have changed my mayonnaise sandwich to a different style. I did eat those as a kid. So when (longtime NASCAR sponsor) Hellmann’s is like, ‘Hey man, that’s a strange sandwich, so we want to do this program around strange sandwiches and would you do that?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes.’ We made the sandwich, and it blows up on the internet, and oh boy! Some people are like, ‘Yeah, I ate those as a kid, but the majority of the people hated it and thought we were crazy people and needed to be locked up. I don’t want to go around shouting it from the roof that I ate that sandwich when I was a kid.”
