Charlie Appleby hails Godolphin stalwart Hawkbill as his retirement is announced

The Godolphin stalwart and two-time Group 1 champ ran his last race in Canada recently.

The five-year-old chalked up ten wins during his globetrotting career and his biggest payday came in the Dubai Sheema Classic where he won over £2.5 million for a resounding success over Poet's Word.

His other career highlight came in the Coral Eclipse when he saw off The Gurkha in a dramatic race.

This came only weeks after picking up the Tercentenary Stakes at Royal Ascot in the famous blue silks.

His trainer Charlie Appleby said: "He was a wonderful racehorse, who will be remembered for bringing Moulton Paddocks to the international stage.

"He was an ambassador for Godolphin, who gave everybody connected with him immense pleasure. He was hugely popular in the yard.

"Now, he is set to enjoy a well-deserved retirement."

Hawkbill raced in six countries over four seasons and was last seen finishing down the field when favourite for the Northern Dancer Turf Stakes at Woodbine in Canada last month.
