The Canberra Raiders will move their round eight game to Wagga next year as part of the NRL's plan to connect with regional fans.

The Raiders will play a yet-to-be-determined opponent on May 4 at 3pm, with the NRL expected to finalise the 2019 draw in the coming weeks.

The Raiders have been working with the ACT government to organise the fixture in the hope of being granted permission to shift a match from Canberra Stadium to Wagga.

It's likely the Raiders' opponent will be a traditionally low-drawing team for Canberra crowds to offset the decision to have one-less match in the capital.

Raiders chief executive Don Furner said: "We are excited about this premiership fixture, the Riverina is a great rugby league region and we are looking forward to finalising plans now that we have a date confirmed."
