Anthony Martial turns down 'several' Man Utd contract offers 'that do not meet expectations'

According to his agent Phillipe Lamboley, the tricky winger has turned down "several" contract offers "that do not meet expectations" from Old Trafford chiefs.

But now that Jose Mourinho has been sacked – a new desire to stay at the club could have reignited.

The 23-year-old was set to become a free agent in the summer but had his current deal extended by a year.

There have been discussions over a new deal in recent weeks – but there is yet to be a breakthrough in negotiations amid fears Martial may decide to quit Old Trafford next summer.

French agent Lamboley said the extension was triggered in October, but parties are far from concluding a new deal.

Speaking to French TV channel RMC, he said: "I am very pessimistic about discussions going positively."

Man Utd's triggering of Martial's deal is a ploy the club have begun to use regularly with their key players.

David de Gea had his contract extended last month by the top brass.

And Martial's extension will provide some more relief to the Red Devils faithful – who are already ecstatic that Mourinho has been given his marching orders.

The Frenchman, who signed for £36million from Monaco in 2015, has been a one of the only good performers this term in a line-up littered with players in bad form.

The French international has scored eight goals in 19 appearances.
