All in the family with Sacred Son for Mollymook Cup

Shoalhaven City Turf Club chief executive Lynn Locke admits to a little bit of bias heading into Mollymook Cup at Nowra on Sunday.

The turf club syndicate owns a part of Sacred Son, which Locke has a share in, and to have him running in one of its major races is exciting.

Sacred Son is one of three runners from the Graeme Murray stable, along  with Coolotta and Fantasy Belle, as he tries to continue a family tradition.

“We all loved Bede, and he won this race seven or eight times, and Paul had the trifecta a couple of years, so it would be good to see Graeme win it, so he can join his dad and brother,” Locke said.

“If he could win it with Sacred Son, that would be better.”

The Nowra club has had a few horses throughout the years with the Murray stable, which has its farm down the road at Conjola.

“It was a way to get some members involved in a horse, and we have had a couple of nice ones,” Locke said. “I get so excited every time they win, and to win a Mollymook Cup would be unbelievable.

“You don’t usually want to see one horse win over another, but I can’t say that with Sacred Son.”

The six-year-old is already a winner at Nowra and returns from a spell on Sunday.

The day has been named the Bede Murray Memorial Day following his death a couple of years ago, and there is a trainer trophy for the afternoon that  carries his name.

His son Graeme is just focused on winning the cup.

“It’s been a great race for the family and I hope we can win it again,” Murray said. “Coolotta has been running in Sydney and was a runner-up in this year a couple of years ago and races for dad’s estate.

“He has a lot of weight but he is a chance, while Fantasy Belle has been racing well and won at Goulburn a couple of runs a go.”

Meanwhile, William Farrar Hotel is still celebrating its Kosciuszko windfall.

The Wagga pub sold the most tickets for Kosciuszko and they turned a $5000 bet for doing that into more than $150,000.

One of the syndicate from the William Farrar won a Kosciuszko slot and had Awesome Pluck run into third for it. The all-up they had was Awesome Pluck into Redzel to win the Everest.
