Why it’s better to order 1 large pizza than 2 medium pizzas, according to maths

If you’re planning on ordering a takeaway pizza this week, you might want to rethink your order.

Mathematicians have revealed that getting one large pizza is a better idea than ordering two medium pizzas.

Surprisingly, one 18-inch pizza actually has more ‘pizza’ than two 12 inch pizzas.

Twitter account Fermat’s Library posted a handy infographic, explaining why.

It tweeted: “Here’s a useful counterintuitive fact: one 18 inch pizza has more ‘pizza’ than two 12 inch pizzas.”

The infographic shows that the area of an 18-inch pizza is 254 square inches, while the area of two 12-inch pizzas is just 226 square inches.

The findings have been welcomed by shocked Twitter users.

One user replied: “Finally!  I can now coherently explain to my 10 year-old why math is important in life: without math, you might unknowingly spend more for less pizza!”

Another joked: “Also, the two 12” pizzas together have 33% more crust, which everyone knows is just a tragic waste of bread.”
