While Saturday’s partial solar eclipse won’t be visible to everyone in the UK, the good news is that there’s much more going on in the sky this weekend.
Saturday and Sunday night will see the peak of the Perseid Meteor shower which will light up skies over the UK, with Sunday night being the most intense.
The peak of the shower will see around 60-70 meteors shooting across the sky every hour.
For a chance of seeing the stunning meteor display, look to the skies from 21:30 onwards.
The new moon means that the sky won’t be too bright – good news for spotting a meteor.
While the weather is forecast to be clear and sunny for much of the weekend, some creeping cloud cover could obscure the view.
For a more reliable view, tuning into a live stream might be the better option.
Robotic telescope service Slooh will be showing a livecast of the Perseid Meteor shower on Sunday from 21:30, though you’ll need to sign up to view it. The good news is that they offer a 30-day free trial.
Slooh has telescopes situated in the Canary Islands and Chile.
The Virtual Telescope Project in Italy will also be showing a livestream of the Perseids at the same time.
The viewing session is free, though the project does ask for donations to ensure that it can keep on offering the service.
