Creepy Amazon and Google smart speakers have been freaking users out with unprompted statements and comments.

One woman was so scared by comments made from her Amazon Echo AI device, that she simply unplugged it and put it in a draw for several days.

The owner had been sat on her bed one day listening to music and crying because she had just quit her job, when she said she heard a voice telling her: ‘It’s going to be OK’.

However, these comforting words did not make the woman feel better as the words had come from Alexa, the Echo Dot speaker which had been set up on her night stand, the Wall Street Journal said.

This isn’t the first time the devices have spooked their owners. There have been various reports of the speakers playing back conversations, playing music unprompted in the middle of the night and even turning on gadgets in other rooms.

One Google Home Mini system recently reminded its owner of a ‘cocaine and reefer’ event at 1pm.

The reminder reportedly made the device’s owner ‘afraid,’ until she realised the device had misheard a pastor on the television talking about ‘cocaine and reefer’ during a speech about addiction in the US.

Other instances have included smart devices swearing and randomly laughing.

Social media users have also spoken about about their experiences with Alexa. One user with the Twitter name Joanna said: ‘A friend gave us an Alexa as a gift. We plugged it in for fun and it was so incredibly creepy! Unplugged it, put it back in the box, and feel its not right to give it to anyone.’

This is while other users admitted that it was ‘creepy when Alexa turns on by itself’. Some users also seemed concerned that the device would talk to you before you had even spoken.

Other users were also surprised at the amount of detail the assistant can take in, one user with the Twitter handle @TRAVisty_James said he had been teasing his friend and had told its Alexa to wake him up at 2am with creepy music. The Alexa then replied and said: ‘setting alarm for 2am tomorrow, with Halloween playlist’.

Earlier this year it was revealed that Amazon’s virtual assistants are vulnerable to hijacking, while the company has been trying to expand the use of its devices wherever possible, including in hotel rooms, home utilities, and for children.

This week, Facebook also announced its own assistant to compete with Amazon and Google.

One user had received the Alexa as a gift and only used it once before putting it back in the box. ‘Joanna’ said she didn’t feel the device was right to give to anyone after her creepy experience

Alanna Littler said the device was creepy as it would speak without being spoken to

Another user Phoenix LaFae said it was creepy when the AI assistant ‘turned on by itself’. Many users on Twitter had described the Alexa device as being ‘creepy’, but it seems that many also continue to user the device

One user thought it would be amusing to trick his friend by setting up a spooky playlist but ended up creeped out when Alexa had taken details from the conversation

WHAT QUESTIONS WON’T ALEXA ANSWER FOR CHILDREN?

Amazon has released a new child-friendly feature for its Alexa smart assitant called FreeTime.

Once activated, the device will answer questions on sensitive topics differently to palm-off curious children.

Alexa changes its answers to questions poised by all members of the household once the feature is turned on, regardless of age.

ALEXA, WHERE DO BABIES COME FROM?

Regular: ‘Babies are made through the process of reproduction.’

Child version: ‘People make people, but how they’re made would be a better question for a grown-up.’

ALEXA, WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU DIE?

Regular: ‘Sorry, I’m not sure.’

Child version: ‘That’s a hard question to answer. If you’re wondering about this, you should ask someone in your family, a teacher, or a friend who you know and trust.’

ALEXA, IS SANTA CLAUS REAL?

Regular: ‘Santa makes a lot of people ho-ho-hopeful for a happy holiday, and I definitely believe in that.’

Child version: ‘Just check if the cookies you set out for him are gone Christmas morning.’

ALEXA, WHAT IS MARIJUANA?

Regular: ‘Marijuana is usually defined as a strong-smelling plant whose dried leaves can be smoked for a pleasant effect or pain reduction or, alternatively, the most commonly used illicit drug; considered a soft drug, it consists of the dried leaves of the hemp plant; smoked or chewed for euphoric effect.’

Child version: ‘I am not able to answer that.’

ALEXA, WHO IS STORMY DANIELS?

Regular: ‘Stormy Daniels is an adult film actress from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.’

Child version: ‘Sorry, I don’t know that.’
