The Most Searched Keyword of 2018 Is Not, Surprisingly, Meghan Markle

Thanks to a royal wedding, breaking royal rules, and an international tour, Meghan Markle kept herself front of mind for a lot of people, but according to the tech-savvy sleuths at Google, we found out that the Duchess of Sussex didn’t even make it onto the top 10 most-searched terms of 2018 — though she did hit the No. 2 spot when it came to specific people. We’ve got the top search terms from 2018 and, no surprise, they’re very 2018. From the biggest events of the year to the biggest people, the lists speak for themselves: we were obsessed with the royals, current events, and, naturally, soccer.

Google’s 2018 Year in Search found that headlines ruled the search bar. Huge events such as the 2018 World Cup, which took place in Russia, took the top spot, but more tragic search terms emerged, too. Mac Miller, Kate Spade, and Anthony Bourdain all made their way into the top 10. But it’s not all bad news, either. Of course, this year’s election made its way onto the list, but so did the Mega Millions Results, which gives you a look at search volume. Even though the lottery nabbed headlines for a few days, it made it on the list, whereas someone like Markle, who’s always out and about, didn’t.

Here’s the complete list of top 2018 searches:
1. World Cup
2. Hurricane Florence
3. Mac Miller
4. Kate Spade
5. Anthony Bourdain
6. Black Panther
7. Mega Millions Results
8. Stan Lee

Markle did top one list: weddings. Thanks to her royal nuptials this year, she was the most searched when it came to tying the knot. Royal Wedding was the No. 1 most searched, but a late entry to the race managed to get runner-up. Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s wedding, which happened late into 2018, was strong enough to best the other royal wedding, Princess Eugenie’s. As for next year? We’re assuming that Nick’s bro Joe will earn a spot.
