My lazy boyfriend adopted a dog and now expects me to look after it after my 12-hour shifts

I like dogs but work 12-hour shifts and don’t have the time or energy. My boyfriend does nothing around the house. He is 29, I am 27.

I came home from work last week to find he’d taken on his mate’s dog. This friend is moving house.

I asked what the dog would do when we were both at work and he shrugged. I said: “Your dog, you look after it.”

He took it back to his mate and they are both angry with me. My boyfriend hasn’t spoken to me since.

I am exhausted from work and do all the housework, the washing and gardening. I am at breaking point.

DEIDRE SAYS: I am glad you stood up for the dog’s right to be properly cared for. Now you need to stand up for your right to the same leisure time he enjoys.

You both work long hours, so your boyfriend should do as many chores around the house as you.

Draw up a list of everything that has to be done, with a guide to how long it all takes, then insist he sign up to a fair share.

If he refuses to do his bit, I can’t see how he will ever make you happy.
