M&S launches Instagram-friendly WATERMELON pink radishes

Simply radishing! M&S launches an ‘Instagram-friendly’ WATERMELON version of the veg that is bright pink inside

  • M&S has been developing its new £1.80 watermelon radishes for six years
  • Unlike red radishes, the skin is white with a hint of green and are magenta inside
  • Like the fruit they are named after, they are also sweeter than a normal radish

The brighter a food is in colour, the most Instagrammable it becomes.

That’s why M&S is expecting its new bright pink watermelon radishes to become the social media sensation of the summer.

The supermarket has been developing the unusual variety of radish for six years with a grower in Sussex, but has only now been able to introduce it into stores for £1.80 for two bunches.

The watermelon radish is so named because it has a hint of green in the skin and is bright magenta inside, much like the fruit it is named after. It also has a sweetness too

Just like watermelon, the new variety has a sweet taste and is bright magenta inside and there is also a hint of green in the white skin.

It’s said to be milder in flavour than the traditional red radish, while being larger in size with only a slight peppery flavour.

The radish, which is a member of the mustard family, can be served fresh in a salad.

It can also be cooked, which is said to enhance the natural sweetness and make the peppery taste more mellow.

M&S is expecting the new radishes to be an Instagram hit because they are so vivid and vibrant in colour. When sliced open, the radishes have a ring of white around the deep magenta flesh (right), which is the opposite of the pattern inside a normal red radish, which has a pink ring around white

The new watermelon radishes are in M&S stores now and are on sale for £1.80 for two bunches. Radish sales have shot up by 8 per cent this year, according to the retailer

M&S expects the new variety, which is a type of daikon radish originating from China, to fly off the shelves as it has seen radish sales rise by 8 per cent this year.

David White, M&S’s salad buyer, said: ‘We love bringing exciting new produce to the high street and the watermelon radish is set to be the hit of the summer.

‘We’re seeing an increase in popularity of our red radishes, so can’t wait for customers to try this alternative.

‘It’s really striking and great for adding to salads or stir fries, or it can be sliced and pickled for a colourful condiment.’
