Morrisons £2 mince pies top BBC Good Food's blind Christmas taste test as top supermarket treats revealed

The supermarket's £2 All Butter Deep Filled Mince Pies were crowned the winner, knocking Aldi and Waitrose into second place in that category.

They took the prize in BBC Good Food's annual festive blind taste test to find the most delicious Christmas food so shoppers can eat well this December.

Marks & Spencer (M&S) won the most categories once again, taking the crown in five out of 17, including for its £10 per kg Pembrokeshire Bronze Free Range Turkey.

But budget supermarkets also beat high-end retailers on many occasions, with Morrisons picking up three prizes.

Asda’s £6.50 Extra Special Christmas pudding won the Christmas pudding category.

Meanwhile Lidl won twice for its £2.39 Deluxe Apricot and White Stilton Stuffing, ranking above Tesco and Asda, and its £3.99 Deluxe Luxury Stollen with Jamaican Rum, beating Booths.

As well as its mince pies, Morrisons also won for its £2 Free From mince pies, which won the Gluten-Free mince pies category, and in the Christmas Cake category, with its £12 The Best Poinsettia Christmas Cake.

And though Marks & Spencer won for its turkey, both Aldi and Lidl were highly commended for Aldi’s Specially Selected Exquisite Ramburgh Farm British free range whole turkey (£8.99 per kg) and Lidl’s Silverslate Turkey (under £9 per kg).

BBC Good Food said it was the best performance ever in the turkey category by budget supermarkets.

Aldi came top in two categories, winning the best sweet canapé for its £3.29 Specially Selected Snowflake Tiffin in Honeycomb & Orange, and picking up the prize for best panettone for its £6.99 Specially Selected Exquisite Panettone.

Judges from the magazine blind-tasted 166 products from 11 of the UK’s leading retailers.

The most expensive product taste tested apart from the turkeys was Waitrose's £30 Fiona Cairns Chocolate Fruitcake, which was beaten by Morrisons in the Christmas cake category, and M&S's £45 Bristish Sirloin of Beef, which won in the alternative meat centrepiece category.

The cheapest item were Morrisons' £2 Free From Mince Pies and its The Best All Butter Deep Filled Mince Pies.
