Love Island has inspired a rise in lingerie sales, a top UK store reveals

High street giant John Lewis credits the rise in G-strings (72 per cent) and suspenders (132 per cent) to the popularity of ITV’s Love Island.

It also says smart doorbells — which boast features such as video streaming — are up by 367 per cent in its annual rundown of sales trends.

This has come at a cost to door knockers, which are down by nine per cent on the same 12 months in 2016/17.

Alarm clocks have also fallen victim to hi-tech alternatives, with 16 per cent fewer sold by the department store chain.

It has shrunk its range by 30 per cent as customers choose mobile phones to wake them up.

Size is really important for Brit telly fans

DVD players are down by 40 per cent while 70-inch tellies are up by 157 per cent. Small TVs, trouser presses and desktop computers have dropped by 34, 36 and 15 per cent respectively.

In Cardiff, men’s white trainers were up by 765 per cent. Residents in Birmingham bought the most thongs, with a 200 per cent rise.

Lewis’s lingerie buyer, Nancy Szachno-Dressel, said: “Customers are after one extreme or the other right now, opting for larger pants or thongs over briefs.”

The company highlighted a Meghan Markle effect on overall sales, saying: “In the week she wore a bright yellow dress, yellow dress sales quadrupled.”
