Emmys 2018: Worst dressed list, from questionable patterns to odd shapes

The 70th Primetime Emmy Awards featured a wide range of skits, songs and speeches. Some of them stole the show and others may have missed the mark.

You’ve done it. You’ve clicked on the worst-dressed list, for any number of reasons. Maybe it’s just a guilty pleasure for you to look at beautiful TV stars and judge their clothes, because nitpicking fashion is fun. Maybe you’re an aspiring stylist and want to see which outfits missed the mark.

Maybe you don’t need to justify scrolling through photos of celebrities on the red carpet. We won’t require one. We’ll just give you what you want.

In no particular order, here are a few Emmy Awards ensembles that maybe you, imaginary stylist, wouldn’t have selected for your A-list clients.

Alexis Bledel

Bledel’s Delpozo ensemble, with embellishments and yellow on the skirt, looks better suited for a bat mitzvah than an actress whose unbelievable beauty is better complemented by something more simple.

Jonathan Van Ness

The “Queer Eye” guy is never shy about making a fashion statement, and we love him for that. But a sheer turtleneck is simply not a practical piece of clothing. The white suit we can get behind.

Claire Foy

Foy would look angelic in a bed sheet, and indeed that’s kind of what’s happening in this custom Calvin Klein outfit. We know that’s an intricate bow design in the back, but it also looks like the dress got toilet-papered. Full disclosure: We almost put this on the best-dressed list.

Connie Britton

Britton’s Sachin & Babi ensemble has a print better suited for a luau than the Emmys. In other news, she seems to be aging on island time: She is GLOWING.

Carrie Brownstein

Brownstein’s dress has pockets. We respect that. But, as her imaginary stylist, we’d put the actress in a much brighter and more fun outfit to walk a red carpet when it’s 80-some degrees out.

Laura Dern

Pearls, a silky blouse and a corset from Thom Browne? Dern’s ensemble would fit a dress code calling for “BDSM business casual,” but is far from the actress’ best Emmys look.

Michelle Wolf

Sparkles and sequins were big on this year’s Emmy, but Wolf’s version of the trend had strange hooks up top that she kept tugging while on the carpet. And the arches on the likable comedian’s dress mirrored her cat-eye makeup in a way that was a bit too matchy for our taste.

Deon Cole

Cole is the cat’s pajamas. Unfortunately, Cole’s Gucci tux also makes us think of pajamas. The actor tends to wear suits in wild patterns, but this outfit is a little much.

Samantha Bee

It’s a wrap dress, it’s a suit jacket, it’s a ruffly ensemble. What Bee’s red-carpet look isn’t, is a perfect Emmy outfit. The TV host’s look has way too much going on.

OK, that’s enough of the dresses we didn’t prefer. Now, it’s time for the best-dressed list.
