Betsey Johnson, the fun-loving 76-year-old fashion designer known for her cartwheels, splits and multicolored hair, has one fatal flaw: she’s practically nose-dead.
As she revives Pretty N’ Punk, a perfume with notes of pink raspberry, gardenia, jasmine, sandalwood and warm amber, Johnson revealed to Page Six Style that she douses herself in the stuff because she doesn’t have a great sense of smell.
“My nose is just… out to lunch!” she joked.
The solution? Pile on the perfume. Not only does Johnson need more pumps of Pretty N’ Punk than most, but superstition leads her to spray a minimum of nine or up to 21 (!) pumps of the stuff around her head, creating a cloud that follows the fashion icon wherever she goes.
Ultimately, Johnson said that she can use up an entire 3.5-ounce bottle of fragrance in about a month — which sometimes gets her into hot water with her family.
“My daughter will kick me out of the car sometimes if I have more than one spray on,” she confessed.
And speaking of hot water: The designer loves to spray the scent liberally into her bathwater, too.
