Why Jessica Alba, Shay Mitchell and More Celebs Spin at Cycle House

Ride or die! Celebrities such as Jessica Alba, Jamie Chung, Shay Mitchell as well as NBA star James Harden are all diehards of the California-based Spin mecca Cycle House.

The reason these superfit celebrities flock there is for the tough 45-minute to 75-minute high intensity spin sessions that promise to burn anywhere from 400 to 1000 calories. “We want you to go as hard as you can. We don’t do just jogs, we do sprints. A sprint for us is all out, as fast as your legs can possibly go,” Cycle House’s Chief Ride Officer Nichelle Hines exclusively shares with Us Weekly. “And what we say a lot of times is, you don’t have to be the strongest, you don’t have to be the fastest, but your effort level has to be as high as it can possibly go. That is what we seek, that is what we believe in, so it is very much an athlete based workout.”

According to Hines, Cycle House attracts a unique mix of clients such as Harden, Alba, Mitchell and Chung to a bike several days a week because they know they’ll get a top notch workout in a fun, group environment. “I think you associate all of these people with being at the top of their game from a physical perspective … and the reason they might come to Cycle House as opposed to somewhere else is because they know that they’re going to get pushed further than they every thought that they could before,” Hines tells Us. “We’re sort of like the Fight Club version [of spin]. We do not sugarcoat our workout. Our workout is about that, [giving] everything you have.”

Although spin is thought to be primarily a leg-centric workout, Hines says that Cycle House’s sessions are intended to target the entire body. “We generate the workout from that entire core base, so if your stomach doesn’t feel like you’re in a Pilates class, you are doing something wrong,” she explains. “We ride with that ass back, those abs engaged, those shoulders down and the energy is generated from that core straight out so it’s almost like you have a string from your belly button to the front of the room where the instructor is and your job is to not let that rope bend.”

For Hines, what Cycle House creates on and off the bike is what keep clients, like Alba, returning week after week. “There is a real atmosphere — we have that great alley in our West Hollywood studio where there’s Alfred Coffee right next door so someone’s going to go and get a coffee and take a photo. And Jessica will come and want to take a photo and want to Instagram that myself, or my brother, or whoever her favorite is, kicked her butt,” Hines reveals. “So I think it’s pretty fair to say that if it’s a Saturday morning, you’re going to see Jessica Alba and Shay Mitchell and Madonna when she’s in the country.”

“#saturdayz #weekendwarriors @galitlaibow joined today and @nichelle pushed us past the pain -#perserverance #hardwork,” Alba captioned a September Instagram picture of herself along with Hines and other riders post-class.

Hines adds that it’s all of Cycle House’s acolytes that make the magic happen. “I think it’s a testament to the workout that you could be anywhere in the world — those are the Jay-Z lyrics — you could be anywhere in the world but you’re here with me — and I appreciate that.”
