Sure, you may love the name you’ve carefully chosen for your little one, but will it stand the test of time?
Of course, there’s no real way of knowing.
Despite a resurgence in popularity of "traditional" names, baby name fashions are still fickle and ever-changing .
So should we maybe audit ourselves before introducing baby Princess Consuela Bananhammock to the world?
Because according to Mamamia , there are six baby VERY useful name tests parents-to-be can do, and they could spare your bundle of joy any future awkwardness…
1. The ‘how many other kids will have the same name in their class’ test?
Without fail, this happens in every school year.
Whether it’s Kates, Ahmeds, Daves or Harpers, in each class, there’ll be a handful of kids with the same name.
No one is suggesting you bust a gut and try to think of a name no one else will have thought of. But, a quick glance at the year’s most popular baby names will give you some idea of what your baby’s peers may also be called.
2. The ‘internet search’ test
In the excitement of having chosen a name, it’s easy to forget that someone else might have gone by that name too.
Someone else who you might not want associated with your sweet bundle of joy.
Like a serial killer, disgraced ex-politician or social media "taste-maker".
A quick Google of the name plus and surname will set your mind at rest…
3. The ‘playground’ test
Pretend you’re shouting your child’s name across a busy playground. Better yet, why not try it out at home?
How does it sound? Could it be mistaken for another name, or a rude word/phrase? Or does it just trip off the tongue awkwardly?
4. The ‘I knew a so-and-so’ test
Does your choice of name conjure up a person who, for whatever reason, you just can’t think fondly of.
You don’t even have to have met them – it can apply to famous people.
Some names just give us bad vibes, and you don’t want that for your child.
5. The ‘is it easy to pronounce or spell?’ test
Your baby name choice doesn’t even need to be particularly unusual or "exotic".
Lindsay/Lindsey, Deborah/Debra are just two examples of good old-fashioned names which people often get wrong.
It can literally happen with any name, but some are more susceptible than others.
6. The ‘is this a food item or offensive/banned name’ test
Some names are doomed to cause your child no end of grief.
Judge carefully, and maybe familiarise yourself with names which are banned.
