Lip Service: Celebrities Who Have Clapped Back About Kissing Their Children on the Mouth

After eight or nine miscarriages and years of infertility struggles, Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade welcomed their first child together, daughter Kaavia James, via surrogate on Nov. 7.

On Dec. 6, the new mom shared a video of herself planting sweet smooches on the baby girl’s lips. And while the video left most fans with baby fever, others warned her against the dangers of kissing a newborn on the mouth.

Union later responded, writing, “I appreciate all the concern about kisses on the mouth and labored breathing, I am blessed enough to have a nurse here with us while at work. Kaav is healthy and I don’t even touch her without washing and sanitizing myself and everything and everyone that comes into contact with her.”

“If you think I waited this long and went thru [sic] all this to put my baby in harm’s way … you got another thing coming,” the actress concluded.

After a documentary called Tom vs. Time aired earlier this year, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady received a slew of negative feedback after he was shown kissing his son John “Jack” Edward Thomas, then 10, on the lips.

A source told PEOPLE at the time of the controversy surrounding the clip, “They are just loving, super affectionate people.”

“It’s so sad that the kiss is ‘a thing’ because they are such good parents,” the insider added of Brady and wife Gisele Bündchen.

In August, new mother of two Hilary Duff opened up to InStyle about a December 2016 photo of herself and son Luca Cruz, now 6½, sharing a kiss at Disneyland.

The Younger actress said of her only child with ex Mike Comrie, “First of all, he was 3. Kiss your kids, and anyone who doesn’t like it can hit unfollow. Not interested in what you have to say.”

“People can be like, ‘Oh you’re holding that child? He’s 6.’ Yeah I swing him over my head, when his legs are tired I hold him — it’s a little hard right now — but yeah, I give piggyback rides,” a then-pregnant Duff continued. “People just have all these crazy judgments, and I think it’s best to not listen and laugh it off.”

In November, David Beckham posted a picture of himself kissing 7-year-old daughter Harper Seven on the lips, more than a year after he shared a snap of the same affectionate gesture between the pair.

Although he hasn’t yet publicly responded to backlash over the most recent photo, according to U.K. outlet The Independent, the former soccer star and father of four said during a 2017 discussion on Facebook Live that “I kiss all my kids on the lips” and he was raised to be “very affectionate.”

“Brooklyn, maybe not. Brooklyn’s 18, he might find that a little bit strange,” Beckham added. “But I’m very affectionate with the kids. It’s how I was brought up and [wife Victoria Beckham], and it’s how we are with our children.”

“We want to show our kids love and we protect them, look after them and support them, and we’re very affectionate with them,” he explained.
