Jewel’s Son Celebrated His 7th Birthday With Unusual Alaskan Tradition

Jewel could care less about gems. And the singer is raising son Kase, 7, to approach life in the same way. Before the little boy celebrated his seventh birthday, the 44-year-old asked him to choose an object that he “dearly loved” to give to a friend.

“He asked me, ‘How will I know if it’s something I really, dearly love?’” Jewel recalled to Us Weekly on Monday, August 21. “And I go, ‘Can you think of giving something away that would make you cry?’ And he instantly started crying.”

The musician, who cofounded the upcoming “Wellness Your Way” festival, revealed that Kase parted ways with his favorite crystal. “I said, ’Think of someone you love that you would like to have it,’ and he did and he was so happy,” Jewel gushed. “He gave it to his friend.” By doing things like this, the Grammy-nominated vocalist explained she is teaching her child “generosity spirit.”

Jewel is also keeping Kase connected to local traditions in Alaska where she was raised. “When the boys turn of age and the girls turn of age, they get their first feel of fish,” she revealed. “Instead of eating it, they [throw it] to the entire village as a thank for you supporting them.”

Kase celebrated the milestone moment with a fish he caught “deep in the ocean of Alaska” with his mom and maternal grandfather Atz Kilcher. “Me and my dad helped filet it for him and he wrapped it up in little two-inch pieces,” Jewel told Us. “He got to throw pieces of fish at, like, his entire family, which made up for not having presents. He got to hunk fish at people!”

Jewel was married to Kase’s father Ty Murray from 2008 to 2014. The nine-time World Champion rodeo cowboy tied the knot with Fox Sports reporter Paige Duke in 2017.

The Kroger’s “Wellness Your Way” festival will run from October 4 to 7 at the Duke Energy Convention Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.
