Hilary Duff Describes the Taste of Her Placenta Smoothie

After Hilary Duff gave birth to her daughter, Banks, on October 25, she cooled down with a placenta smoothie.

“Most delightful smoothie I’ve ever had,” Duff, 31, revealed on the Thursday, November 8, episode of Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy podcast. “I haven’t had a smoothie that delightful since I was 10. It was calorie-filled with juice and fruit and everything delicious.”

The Younger actress is now enjoying the drink in ice cube form — so visitors at the Duff household be warned. There’s a human organ in the freezer! (Though there are no proven benefits, proponents of the trend claim that eating the placenta can help prevent postpartum depression.)

When Dr. Elliott Berlin inquired as to why Duff didn’t eat her placenta in capsule form, she replied, “I’ve heard placenta burps are not ideal.”

The Lizzie McGuire alum, who shares her baby girl with boyfriend Matthew Koma, had a drug-free water birth at home. When it was time to push, Duff became emotional. “I was bawling, hysterically, crying tears of joy,” she recalled. “I felt so proud of myself. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I’m there. I got there.’”

When Banks was first placed in Duff’s arms, something incredible happened. “She reaches up her arms and curls into me as if to give me a hug,” the “So Yesterday” singer gushed. “It was clearly, like, a hug. It was amazing.”

Duff is also mom of son, Luca, 6, whom she shares with her ex-husband Mike Comrie. The little boy knows about the placenta ice cubes. “Luca asked to see it,” Duff quipped. It was a decision he regretted. “He said, ‘I wish I hadn’t asked!’”
