7 Haunted Hotels That Will Totally Give You the Creeps

Just the sight of the Stanley Hotel nestled near the Rocky Mountains in Colorado will send chills down any The Shining fan’s spine, but the paranormal activity at this 107-year-old resort started long before Jack Nicholson took an axe to it. After the original glory of the property had faded, it became known as a haunted hot spot, with the hotel’s founders, Freeman Oscar Stanley and his wife, Flora, being two of the most common visitors from beyond the grave. Guests often hear Flora’s antique piano playing late in the night, and her husband has made more than one photo bomb in pictures of the hotel’s Billiards Room.

Just outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, sits The Myrtles Plantation, one of America’s most haunted homes. You’ll want to take plenty of pictures during your stay at the gorgeous Southern-style house built in 1796, but don’t forget to give them a good look once you’re home — you might find a ghostly figure or two making an appearance in the background.

It doesn’t get much spookier than a trip to Salem, Massachusetts! As the site of the Salem Witch Trials, it’s only natural that the town have some local haunts, one being the historic Hawthorne Hotel. Flickering lights and human-shaped apparitions are a few of the unexplained activities at the 91-year-old hotel, according to Architectural Digest, but it’s also taken part in some good-spirited jest, serving as the filming location for the “Salem Saga” episodes of the popular TV show, Bewitched.

Although the Hotel Galvez & Spa in Galveston, Texas, boasts luxury accommodations and modern amenities by day, you might be paid a visit by the resort’s ghost in room 501 by night. The legend goes that a woman who was staying in the room took her own life after discovering her finances were in ruin. She’s since stuck around to give current visitors a scare, with the website saying she’s especially active “during October Ghost Tours.”

The Marshall House in Savannah, Georgia, has served as a hospital three times since 1851, making it a magnet for the dearly departed. Guests have reported hearing children running the halls at night, faucets turning on and off and seeing ghosts in the hallways, among other unexplained activity. Don’t let the uninvited guests keep you from stopping by, though, as the hotel insists their ghouls “are of the friendly variety.”

The Hollywood Roosevelt has been a hotspot for celebs since it opened in the 1920s, but there’s one movie star who lived at the property for two years that might still roams the halls: Marilyn Monroe.

Hotel Chelsea in New York City has hosted a variety of famous faces, including Mark Twain, Andy Warhol and Ethan Hawke, according to AD. But after Nancy Spungen, girlfriend to the Sex Pistols’ Sid Vicious, died at the property, it’s carried a more supernatural reputation. The hotel, which has been closed since 2011, is planning to reopen in 2017. No word on whether ghosts from the hotel’s past will stay on.
