A Police Officer Is Being Called a Hero After Breastfeeding a Malnourished Baby

Officer Celeste Ayala was working her shift at Sor María Ludovica in Buenos Aires, Argentina, when she heard a crying baby that needed to be fed, CBS News reports. According to The New York Times, Celeste was among a team of officers who took six siblings into state custody because of “dismal conditions” at home. CBS reports that the baby was brought in with five siblings by social workers.

Once Celeste heard the youngest — about seven months old, per NYT — crying, she sprung into action and with permission of the hospital staff, the officer breastfed the baby.

Police officer Celeste Jaqueline Ayala was patrolling a children’s hospital in Berisso, Argentina, last week when she heard a baby crying, and she could tell the infant needed food. So Ayala, who is also a new mother, decided to breastfeed him herself. Because of her action, Ayala has now been promoted from officer to sergeant. (?: Marcos Heredia/Facebook)

Celeste, who is the mother of a 16-month-old daughter herself, says she didn’t doubt her gesture for a second. A colleague of Celeste’s, Marcos Heredia, took a photo of the officer breastfeeding the infant in uniform. He posted the image to Facebook, saying “I want to make public this great gesture of love that you made today with that baby, who you did not know, but for who you did not hesitate to act like a mother,” according to CBS News.

The Facebook post has since had more than 300 comments and over 110 thousand shares. Facebook users worldwide have praised Celeste for her actions, with kind words such as “God bless you” and “I congratulate you as a mother and woman!”

Celeste’s kindness was rewarded with more than a viral post on social media. Cristian Ritondo, minister of security of the Province of Buenos Aires, promoted her from officer to sergeant, per CBS. Very well-deserved! Cristian tweeted a photo with Celeste, thanking her for her gesture of “spontaneous love”.

Others have taken to Twitter, as well, to share their gratitude and well-wishes for Celeste.

This is on duty police officer #CelesteAyala. She asked to look after a baby crying as overloaded staff in an Argentine hospital were unable to see to him. She then breastfed him like an absolute trooper. The power of woman.???? pic.twitter.com/T2tknZ8Fby
