Concert-goers evacuated from Alt J gig following reports of fire

Concert-goers were evacuated from Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall following reports of a fire at an Alt-J gig.

Images posted on social media showed people outside the building at around 9.30pm this evening.

Nathan Whittaker posted on Twitter: "Alt J were due on stage at exactly the time the alarm started sounding in the Bridgewater Hall, so people thought it might have been part of it… nope!"

Lucy Evans posted: "There appears to be a fire at the Bridgewater Hall, as there was a heavy smell of smoke and we’ve all been evacuated. Emergency services are here, but please be safe everyone."

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said they scrambled three fire engines to the scene at about 9.09pm on Sunday following reports of a litter fire at the Bridgewater Hall, reports Manchester Evening News.

Firefighters used hose reels and a ladder to tackle the fire. "Everybody has been evacuated safely," said the fire service spokesman.

One concert-goer, researcher Pete Mullarky, 35, from Stockport, said some people inside the venue initially thought the alarm was a part of the act.

He said: “The support act had just finished and the band was about to come on. Then all of a sudden the lights came up again and there was an emergency alert.

"Actually a lot of people thought it was part of the act at first. Then they realised it wasn’t and left the auditorium. They left peacefully and calmly.”
