Why Princess Eugenie left an empty seat in the front row of her wedding

But while Windsor Castle was packed to the rafters with A-listers – including Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Cara Delevingne and Pippa Middleton – the bride, 28, had noticeably left a seat in the front row empty.

The reason for this unusual arrangement was to keep her grandmother, the Queen, happy.

Protocol dictates that no one can sit in front of the Queen and obstruct her view.

Further to this, St George’s is the Queen’s private chapel and this front row seat is said to be one she doesn’t find comfortable.

Her Majesty prefers to sit in the second row alongside husband Prince Philip, and other senior royals including Prince Charles, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

The seat was left empty at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding back in May, and royal fans mistakenly thought it was a poignant tribute to Princess Diana.

A royal commentator said: “The seat in front of the Queen is always left empty, I am told by BP [Buckingham Palace].

“She needs to be seen — and the seat she was sitting in today is her favourite seat in that chapel, apparently!”

Princess Eugenie wowed in a low-backed bespoke gown by Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vo.

The Queen's granddaughter married her boyfriend of eight years Jack Brooksbank, 32, who popped the question against the dramatic backdrop of a sunset volcano in Nicaragua back in January.

Eugenie, who works as an associate director at a London art gallery, wore her childhood surgery scars with pride, in a gown which exposed signs of a spinal op she had at the age of 12.

The princess had major surgery to correct a curvature of her spine, known as scoliosis, and had steel rods inserted into her back.
