What we can ALL learn from Love Island’s Megan – and why dating Joe helped me love myself more, just like Wes helped Meg

But when I met her yesterday, what I saw was someone who was really strong willed, assertive, admirable and funny.

Megan and boyfriend Wes Nelson joined me on Loose Women.

As soon as we sat down, she asked if we could start the interview by addressing the negative rumours that have been circulating about her.

I thought that was extremely powerful and brave.

Instead of shying away from it, she wanted to be in control of what was being said and set the record straight, using her own words, rather than people making assumptions.

"It’s just a small part of my life. It was in the past. Love Island has changed me.

"I’ve come out a stronger, more confident person. It’s time to move forward,” she said, and good on her!

Inevitably, the question came up regarding the £25k worth of surgery she had undergone to look the way that she did – from a boob job to lip fillers and a nose job.

Megan started off by saying that it’s what she wanted to do, it made her happy and she’s not apologising for it.

Each to their own, I say.

And at least she’s owning it and not pretending that it’s all what her mumma gave her.

“Women should empower each other,” she said. “It’s your body. Do what you want with it,” and I couldn’t agree more.

Yes, none of us want our children to feel so insecure that they undergo surgery in an attempt to feel accepted and fit in with societal norms.

However, if Megan isn’t a clear example that it doesn’t matter how much money you spend on changing your appearance it’s not always going to make you happier, then I don’t know what is.

After £25K’s worth of nipping and tucking, she was STILL not fulfilled – what a powerful message to send young girls.

Megan said she'd tried making money to make her happy, as well as cosmetic surgery, dating older and younger men and buying expensive clothes but admitted that this “fake happiness” never lasted.

She says finding someone who loved her – with no preconceived ideas about who she was or what she’d done – has left her feeling of happiest she’s ever felt.

And what’s more powerful is the fact she says the feelings she has for Wes aren’t fizzling out like they have done before. Hurrah!

Nurturing and spending time and effort on what’s happening underneath our exteriors is much more lucrative than spending a lifetime and shed load of money on your outside.

Of course, true happiness doesn’t come from simply meeting someone else, but I totally get what Megan means about how finding someone who loves you for you accentuates your confidence.

I feel that with Joe, too.

Like Megan, I worked really hard on myself, to like who I was, before I met Joe.

Meeting him, falling in love, and having the relationship that we have is just the icing on the cake.

He loves me for me. No matter what I look like, no matter my past.

Being happy in a relationship isn’t the be all and end all to feeling confident, but it definitely gives it another dimension.

It can be something as simple as when he does the washing up, or looks after the kids when I’ve got no one else to help or by just giving me a cuddle.

It’s never a challenge with him.

I know he’s got my back and it’s that trust is what I saw in Megan and Wes, too.

Confidence is complex issue but I think we can all learn a little from Megan.

She recently said on Instagram: “I support all women, regardless of the choices they make about what they do with their bodies.

“I won’t allow stories […] stop me from be a free thinking, confident, independent young woman striving to make a better life for myself and my family.” YES!

Long may this confidence we see in Megan continue. She seemed like a smart, kind woman and I hope she carries on spreading a positive message to her millions of followers.

Last week, Stacey revealed she had tried Botox and would never use it again.

She also opened up about skinny shaming and how being called thin is not okay.

And read Stacey's confession about being called a 'child abuser' after she posted a snap of her kissing her son on the lips.
