We meet the British 19-year-old signed to Kate Moss’ model agency
Every week, Bazaar‘s booking team highlights one name to note, from the industry’s best-known faces to girls who are just starting out. This week, we turn our attention to Anna-Lea Gardner.
As the latest in a long line of fashion’s Brit obsessions, Anna-Lea Gardner has the kind of buzz most models only dream about. When you are one of the first to be signed by Kate Moss’ new agency and the latest model to be tapped by Miuccia Prada – the barometer of model greatness – for her Resort 2018 show, it’s safe to say that you’re in high demand. Heading into fashion month this autumn, it’s not a matter of will Gardner show up, but where.
“Anna-Lea is so effortlessly cool… we fell for her instantly,” says Chelsea Price at Kate Moss Agency. “She looks so fresh and modern and is the perfect addition to our gang.”
Armed with a soulful gaze, incredible bone structure and versatility in print, the 19-year-old is sure to be one of the defining models of the current generation of British rising stars. We talk to the newcomer about her favourite London spots, bacon cheeseburgers and Lily Cole.
How were you discovered?
“I was scouted by KMA at the dog races in Tooting about two months ago.”
If you weren’t modelling, which career would you pursue and why?
“I definitely want to pursue a career at the same time as modelling! I’m still figuring out what I would like to do. I’m starting university in New York in September, I’ll be studying something art- or history-related because those are the two areas that interest me most.“
What would you say has been the highlight of your career so far?
“Definitely walking for Prada Resort.”
How do you spend your free time?
“Hang out with friends, go to exhibitions and blues/jazz bars, spend time with my family and watch weird documentaries about space or prisons or something.”
Do you have any travel tips for those visiting your home town?
“I live in London and I absolutely love it. There’s so much to do but I’d recommend visiting Richmond Park, it’s so beautiful; in the evening I’d go to Ain’t Nothin’ But, a blues bar in Piccadilly Circus, it’s so much fun.“
What are the three products you can’t live without?
“Pond’s moisturiser, Lancôme’s Gel Eclat Cleanser and anything by Moroccanoil.“
What is your favourite form of exercise?
“I work out twice a week with a trainer; we do lots of squats, lunges, push-ups, weights etc.”
What is your dream shoot?
“I think a shoot where I get to ski or snowboard would be so cool, or skydive, I’ve always wanted to skydive. I would love to shoot with David Sims, I think his work is just really really cool and he’d be a lot of fun to work with. I’d also love to shoot somewhere like Cuba or Mexico or somewhere like that.“
Name your five essential items you wouldn’t leave the house without?
“My Oyster card, phone, driving licence, headphones and a hoodie.”
If you had to wear only one designer, who would it be?
“Probably Céline, I like its oversize items and slightly boyish pieces.”
What kind of advice would you give to new girls to the industry?
“Try to have fun! Don’t take anything too seriously or personally.”
Is there a model’s career that you admire and why?
“Well I think we can all agree Kate Moss is the best model ever… but I also really admire Lily Cole because of her humanitarian roles and because she’s so active in things outside of modelling; she has so many dimensions.”
What is your life motto?
“To try to find joy in anything I do and to be grateful.“
Let’s talk about favourites. What about…
…music? “I’m kind of obsessed with Iggy Pop right now.“
…books? “Redeeming Love.”
…food? “Bacon cheeseburger.”
