Balancing your work, family and social life takes its toll, and "you time" suddenly becomes non-existent.

But it's vital men take some time to look after themselves, as even a few minutes could save a life.

Whether it's keeping yourself physically fit, or taking the time to chat to a mate, your health should never be put on the back burner.

These are the five things every bloke should do to keep themselves in tip-top shape.

1. Step back and make time

The older we get, the harder it can be to stay connected with friends.

But taking time for a catch up with those close to you is vital for your mental health.

Relaxing and spending time with your mates can completely alter your mood and view on all areas of life.

2. Talk openly, listen thoughtfully

Men are stereotypically closed-off beings – and talking isn't usually our strong point.

We are great at lending a hand to a mate in need, but we just aren't as good when it comes to reaching out for help ourselves.

Some 70 per cent of British blokes say their friends can rely on them for support, but less than half say they will rely on their friends in return, according to the Movember Foundation.

Talking openly and honestly when you are struggling can take a big weight off your shoulders, while listening to someone else in their time of need could be life-saving.

3. Learn the facts

When it comes to prostate cancer, learning the key signs and symptoms could be the difference between catching it early or late.

As one of the biggest killers of men in the UK, it's vital everyone knows what to look out for. 

And starting the conversation with your doctor about getting a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test done once your turn 45 is a must.

4. Get the heart rate up

Adding more activity to your day can help you feel better overall.

And that doesn't have to be an intense workout.

Whether it's simply walking to the office, taking the stairs or cycling to work, any time you can get moving, you'll be improving your general well being.

5. Grab life by the balls

Or rather, grab yourself by the balls.

Getting to know what's normal for your testicles will mean you can spot straight away when something is wrong.

Identifying testicular cancer early can massively increase your chance of survival.

Owen Sharp, CEO of the Movember Foundation, said: “Movember exists because men die on average six years younger than women around the world.

"Men deserve better and we’re very ambitious about what the funds and awareness generated by the Movember campaign can achieve.

"However, men need to take their health more seriously too; understanding their risks and taking action when necessary.

"Simple things like moving more, talking openly when the going is tough and making time for your mates can have surprisingly big effects.

"There’s no better time to get into these good habits than right now.”
