We are living in the golden age of sweatpants. Previously relegated to the gym or the couch, the new generation of sweatpants are meant to be worn everywhere. They’re trimmer, slimmer and more akin to skinny jeans than the baggy standard-issue styles you wore in P.E. class. Call them “athleisure” if you must, but the new comfort-first pants even come with a new name: joggers. That usually means they’re tapered, slim-cut and actually meant to be worn outside the gym.
This does not mean that all sweatpants are created equal, or that just because you’re wearing sweatpants outside that you look put together. Keep the cut slim. Look for styles that taper at the ankle or have a cuff instead of a straight hem. Grey is a classic, but stay away from athletic-issue light grey if you want to be able to dress them up. Most offices don’t consider sweatpants appropriate work attire (yet), so if you’re unsure, keep them to the weekend or travel.
And for the love of god, don’t wear the same pair over and over again (unless you’re Kanye West).

What makes a pair of sweatpants like these suitable for the outside world are details like a fly (so they look more finished) and a heavier fabric (so they don’t look like pajamas).
