Rich Kids Go Skint star reveals he's NEVER been into a council house before and was starving for his whole stint on the show because the meals were so small

Patrick, 21, who grew up in a six-bedroom mansion with a Rolex collection and a Mercedes to drive, certainly hasn't had to struggle in life.

Wealthy Patrick, 21, got a shock when seeing how the other half live in SalfordBeing an only child to rich parents, his dad is a wealthy businessman in both the cosmetics and property development industry, Patrick certainly grew up “in a bubble”.

But he certainly came down to earth with a bang in the 5STAR programme, when he swapped his manicured lawns, football pitches and luxury treehouse, to visit the Salford home.

Speaking exclusively to the Sun Online about his experience, Patrick said: “I’ve never been to someone’s house who is on benefits, but I’m sure I’ve met people before on benefits somewhere.

“The quality was different for sure. I think obviously it wasn’t as tidy, it was a bit more chaotic as well, probably because she had a child.

“There wasn’t really much in the flat and the area was pretty basic.”

He found one of the most surprisingly things about the house that Katrina and son Jackson lived in, was the lack of dining room table, which meant they ate off their laps.

He said: “Basic sofa, basic small table. She didn’t have a table to eat on they ate on their sofa which I thought was weird.”

Patrick said he is lucky enough to have his mum cook him three meals a day when he’s home, usually of steak or salmon, but revealed he went “hungry” after the meal Katrina gave him.

He revealed: “The portion size was really, really small. Obviously it was so generous of her to give me some of her food, so you can’t ask for more or anything.”

The single mum served two chicken kiev balls and fries as their evening meal, and Patrick said he was surprised when he learned that Katrina couldn’t afford ketchup.

The 21-year-old admitted: “She didn’t have any sauce, like ketchup because she said that’s just an expense that she doesn’t want to pay, you know.

“She literally didn’t have ketchup for her chips, like there’s no extras at all. And I was really shocked.

“I thought everyone had ketchup.”

Katrina lives off £500 a month, and budgets less than £30 a week to feed her and her son.

Meanwhile Patrick is used to constantly dining out when his mum isn’t cooking, and regularly racks up hundreds of pounds on one restaurant bill.

Speaking on the phone to his friend on holiday in the Maldives, Patrick says on the show: “I mean, £30! That’s a carpaccio starter.”

Despite not having much, Patrick said Katrina welcomed him with open arms into her home.

He said: “I thought I would be quite judged going into her house and I thought maybe she wouldn’t be nice to me or maybe wouldn’t like me from the beginning, which obviously would have been unfair because she didn’t know me.

“I was surprised obviously by how friendly she was and how welcoming and how easy she made it for me to come into her home.”

Katrina grew up in care and couldn’t read or write until he was around 18 and even served a prison sentence (the crime isn’t specified).

Patrick said: “I really felt sorry for her. But she’d come a long way I think from what she was saying to than where she was just a few years ago. I just empathise with her really.

“She just survives. She doesn’t do anything leisurely you know. She doesn’t spend her money to enjoy anything, it’s purely just to like eat and pay bills and stay warm.

“I spend more of my money on like enjoying myself. So eating, going for a nice dinner, just experiencing nicer things than she does.”

The contrasting pair headed to a food bank, where struggling families can pay a few pounds each week to stock up their cupboards on donated food worth around £15.

Well-fed Patrick didn’t know such places existed, and said on the show: “Not in this country, no. I mean, you hear of people in Africa not having enough food, but not here.”

On the other end of spectrum, Katrina can’t begin to imagine what it must be like to have watch worth thousands, when she has just two costing around £3 each.

Looking at the extravagant Rolex on Patrick’s wrist, she says: “I think even if I won the lottery I wouldn’t buy one of those.”

Patrick said he still keeps in touch with Katrina weekly, and the experience changed his life.

He admitted: “I think it made it clearer how tough it is for people.

“I didn’t realise how tricky it would be. Like she’s had it tough from the very beginning and she hasn’t had any help from anyone really so it was all on her own which is tough.

“It definitely opened my eyes a lot, because I didn’t realise how tough it was for some people. Like people so close to home.

“We both live in the same country and I didn’t realise just how different two people’s lives could be.”

Determined to help Katrina, he generously gives six free passes to the trampoline they visited during his stay.

He said he didn’t give her money, and added: “I don’t think she would want that either.”

Patrick now works for his dad and insists he wants to buy a place “with his own money”.

He even has a new appreciation for his Rolex watch, and looking down at it says: “I do look at it and think ‘for what I paid for this I could feed myself for a year.’”

He said: “You can have all your nice stuff, all your nice cars and that.

“But at the end of the day it comes down to your family and how close you are and friends.

“Which is obviously what money doesn’t get you, so I think at the end of the day it’s not a big part of being happy.”
