Mum rages after ex pierces her nine-week-old daughter’s ears… without telling her

Posting on Netmums, Melissa Bowen said her ex had the tot overnight on Sunday, and darted off without explaining what he'd done on Monday afternoon.

"I have never liked the thought of piercing a babies ears," she wrote on Netmums.

"I expressed this to my ex a few weeks ago when he said she would look cute with her ears pierced.

"I said that I didn't think piercings were for baby's and that she can have them pierced when she is old enough to ask me. "

When Melissa's daughter came home on Monday, her ex said she was in a "grumpy" mood – without revealing why.

Melissa added: "Our daughter wasn't just grumpy she was full on screaming like I had never heard before!

"I got her immediately and gave her a cuddle, when taking her hat off I realised what was bothering her!

"He had taken her to have her ears pierced god knows where! Her ears are still flaming hot and swollen right now!

"I can't believe he would do that behind my back and run off before I could confront him! He purposely caused her pain for absolutely no reason!"

Now the dad is refusing to say where he got the piercings done, leaving Melissa scared the practitioner isn't properly qualified – and her baby could get an infection.

She said: "I have tried to take the ear rings out, but it's so sore to even touch."

Her fellow parents were equally shocked, with one suggesting it's "child abuse" to get a baby's ears pierced.

Among them was Gemma B, who wrote: "I would be fuming like you and not trusting him to look after her again.

"Can you get a doctor to remove them? They could use some anaesthetic or something.

"Poor little munchkin, can't stand the thought of a baby being put through pain like that. He's totally irresponsible."

While Danielle R commented: "Omg I’d be absolutely livid. I have lots of friends on my Facebook with little girls who have their ears pierced when babies and I hate it.

"Why put such a little thing through the pain and discomfort."

At what age can you legally get your baby's ears pierced?

  • There is currently no legal age limit for kids to get ear piercings, although some jewellers have set their own guidelines.
  • Claire's do not pierce tots under the age of four months, while at F. Hinds kids have to be at least six years old.
  • A petition calling for the government to change the law, and make it illegal for babies and toddlers to get their ears pierced, has now reached nearly 37,000 signatures.
  • Creator Susan Ingram argues piercing a baby's ears "serves no purpose other than to satisfy the parent's vanity".
  • It's normal for girls to get their ears pierced at birth in some cultures.

And Sarah R added: "Wow how irresponsible! A man that goes behind the back of his kids mother when she has specifically said no does not deserve to be a father in my opinion!

"Causing unnecessary pain to such a small baby like that? Nah, he doesn’t deserve to be left alone with her again until he can prove he can be a good father.

"Although I don’t believe in babies that young getting their ears pierced, that should be a decision BOTH parents should be making TOGETHER!!"

Natalie T, meanwhile, said: "I’m surprised they did them at that age. I thought 4-6 months was the minimum?"

There is currently no legal limit for ear piercing here in Britain, but some shops don't allow babies in the chair.
