Fashion Nova has released a ‘sexy Geisha’ Halloween outfit – and people think it’s culturally inappropriate

The clothing brand is selling a range of costumes, including ninjas and cats, but its geisha design has come under fire.

The $49.99 (£38.09) outfit includes a kimono, skirt, obi – a belt-like sash – and hair sticks.

But it has been criticised for being inappropriate.

Students Teaching about Racism in Society (STARS), told Metro: “What makes Fashion Nova’s costume so racially insensitive is that it feeds into a stereotype of Asian women being sexual objects and temptresses for men’s (almost always white men) desires.

“We know this because the costume is explicitly marketed as “sexy”.

“It is harmful to create costumes based off of racial stereotypes because those costumes then reinforce harmful ideas and power dynamics.”

Recently a ‘sexy Handmaid’s Tale’ costume was pulled after there was a public backlash over the costume.

The outfit resembled what the cast wore in the TV series, which is set in a dystopian society where women are only valued for their ability to bear children.

As well as geishas, people have also criticised other cultural choices, including Native American and Day of the Dead, arguing Halloween does not make it acceptable to wear these outfits.

One person posted online: “Halloween costumes that are not okay: A gypsy, Day of the Dead anything, A Geisha, A Native American.

“If it has the word sexy in front of something that should not be sexy.

“Anything that is not of your own heritage or race!!”

Another said: “Now that it’s a spooky season that still doesn’t give you the right to dress up as a sexy native american or a sexy geisha or anything like that, happy halloween!”

But some people have defended the costumes, saying: “Dressing up as something your [sic] not is exactly what Halloween is all about."

If you want some inspiration, Primark is already selling light-up pumpkins and ghosts for Halloween.

While you can make your pet look their beastly best in these spooky Halloween costumes… priced from just £10.

And Primark is selling a dupe of Charlotte Tilbury’s cream eyeshadow – which is £20 cheaper.
