Duchess Kate Is Bringing Back Blair Waldorf’s Best Accessory

Once upon a time, Gossip Girl’s Blair Waldorf ruled the Upper East Side in her wardrobe of fab headbands, and now the preppy hair accessory is getting the real life royal treatment thanks to Kate Middleton. Since the Christening of Prince Louis in July, the Duchess of Cambridge has been quietly trading her go-to hats and fascinators for the more modern style, and her latest headband moment has “holiday hair” written all over it.

At a ceremony honoring the centenary of the World War I armistice at Westminster Abbey in London on Sunday, November 11, the mom of three looked regal in an emerald double-breasted Catherine Walker coat (a piece she first debuted on St. Patrick’s Day in 2017) and poppy pin, but it was her chunky Jane Taylor London black velvet headband that stole the show.

The plush hair piece tucked perfectly into the Duchess’ glossy chignon, and, while the accessory is timeless, it felt like a 21st century take on royal protocol and tradition (much in the way her sister-in-law Duchess Meghan’s messy buns feel fresh and youthful). The velvet style is a super chic option heading into the holiday season, but the weekend look wasn’t the first headband we’ve seen on Middleton this year.

For one of her first appearances following the birth of Price Louis, the royal stunned at his Christening on Monday, July 9, in an ivory Alexander McQueen frock and embellished Jane Taylor headpiece. The bespoke floral accessory had a whimsical crown-like effect that was perfect for the joyful occasion.

While Kate has always opted to wear her headbands with a sophisticated updo, the accessory would look equally chic with a half-up, half-down style or bouncy blowout, and we can only hope there are many more Blair Waldorf-approved headpieces in the royal’s future.
