Strictly champion Stacey Dooley laughs off ‘knicker flashing’ incident as Kevin Clifton admits he’s been teased for crying during emotional final

Stacey Dooley has laughed off the awkward wardrobe malfunction that sent Strictly Come Dancing viewers into a spin during Saturday’s live final.

Fresh from her win with Kevin Clifton, the pair appeared on Monday’s episode of This Morning as they looked back on their dancing journey.

Yet whilst the pair beat trained dancers to bag the Glitterball Trophy, the scandal on everyone’s lips was Stacey’s vigorous skirt swishing during her Paso Doble – which some viewers believed had left her exposed.

‘It wasn’t my actual knickers, its was like a leotard. It was Saturday night… not the end of the world!’

Meanwhile, Kevin’s behaviour during the final has also come under scrutiny, with the professional getting teased by his friends for breaking down in tears.

Kevin’s win was an emotional one, as he has previously reached the final four times without being able to take home the trophy.

Stacey revealed: ‘He told me he’s going to get such a hard time from his friends back home [for crying].

‘We accepted that we wouldn’t win… I thought Joe had it in the bag, I took him aside and said just enjoy it, so I felt really calm!’

Kevin, 36, added: ‘When we were at the bottom of the leaderboard, we thought there was no chance. It was a complete shock.

‘Craig Revel-Horwood always seem to be always really hard with me in the final, so I thought “aww no, not again!”‘

Stacey continued: ‘I know it’s ridiculous to say this, because everyone says it, but I didn’t think I would win. There was so many brilliant dancers, so I didn’t want to look like an idiot.’

Kevin and Stacey proved to be a match made in heaven, with the pair being favourites to win the show from an early stage – despite never achieving a perfect score or topping the leaderboard.

Explaining their chemistry, Kevin revealed: ‘When you get asked who’s your ideal partner, it’s never really the priority to be an amazing dancer, it’s about getting on with someone.

‘Stacey was the ultimate dream partner. We worked 14 hours days, we upped our hours from eight in the morning to ten at night.’

And the long days continued on the final, with Stacey admitting she partied until 5am during the Strictly wrap party, but wasn’t drinking: ‘I was posing with the trophy’, she confessed.

Stacey added that although the main Glitterball Trophy is staying in the Strictly studios, she and Kevin have been given mini ones to take away.

During the final Stacey told hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman she wanted to win the show even more for Kevin than she wanted it for herself.

She said: ‘I should say something quite poignant, shouldn’t I? You know how highly I think of you. I think you are the biggest gem.

‘It’s no surprise you have been in the final as many times as you have. It’s daunting doing something you haven’t done before. But he’s so patient and he walks you through. You so deserve this. You so deserve this.’

Through his tears Kevin had similarly kind words for Stacey, as he added: ‘Thank you so much. Not just for being so amazing and dancing so well and getting this, but just for being the most wonderful person to work with, to spend every day in training with.

‘You’ve worked so hard, and always with a massive smile on your face. You’re just so lovely, and I think the absolute world of you, thank you so much.’

He was congratulated by his estranged wife Karen Clifton following his win, with the dancer embracing Kevin as she told him: ‘You did it!’

Despite receiving the lowest total points on the leaderboard, Stacey and Kevin beat the likes of Faye Tozer, Ashley Roberts and Joe Sugg to land the coveted trophy.

They performed three dances on the night; a Showdance to Land Of A Thousand Dancers by Jessica Mauboy, their Favourite Dance: Paso Doble to Malagueña by Brian Setzer and their Judges’ Choice: Foxtrot to High Ho Silver Lining by Jeff Beck
