Selena Gomez fans troll photog who said singer copycatted her

Photographer Sarah Bahbah, known for her unique and much-imitated style, has never sued an impersonator — including Selena Gomez.

In June, Gomez released the video for “Back to You” and was accused of copying the Palestinian-Australian artist’s signature aesthetic. When Bahbah noted the controversy on social media, Selena’s fans trolled her mercilessly.

“Her fans wrote damaging messages on my works, [which are] about the taboos around child sexual abuse,” Bahbah told me.

A survivor of childhood sex abuse, Bahbah is known for her cinematic photos with captions such as “I lose my mind dreaming about you” and “Am I finally free?”

Gomez uses similar images in her video, with captions such as “I know I’d go back to you” and “What’s the point in hiding?”

“I’m flattered if I was a source of inspiration. I just take it as a compliment,” said Bahbah. She decided that suing over the video was “not a worthwhile investment for my mental health,” adding, “I would love to collaborate with Gomez on a special project in the future.”
