Scooter Braun Says He Used To Worry That Justin Bieber Would OD

Scooter Braun, manager of or person responsible for assisting in unleashing the terror that is Justin Bieber (depending on which side of history you’re on) recently spoke about his relationship with Justin on Van Lathan’s The Red Pill podcast (via E! News). Scooter says the life of Justin’s manager wasn’t always about booking gigs and cashing massive checks; at one point in time, Scooter was terrified that Justin was going to die. This might be the most somber thing to come from the mouth of a guy named “Scooter.

Current-day Justin Bieber is all about Jesus, engagement rings, and the simple life in the woods. But 2014-era Justin Bieber was a mess. That was the egg-throwing, property-damaging, Ibiza-brawling, getting-arrested-for-drag-racing time in his life. Justin was 19 at the time, and there was nothing Scooter could do to wrangle him anymore. And so he spent many nights thinking that was the last time he’d hear from Justin alive.

“There was a time when I would go to sleep almost every night – when he had the money to fly away from me – and I was worried every night that I was going to lose him. I thought he was going to die. I thought he was going to sleep one night and that he would have so much crap in his system that he would not wake up the next morning.”

Justin didn’t suddenly get better when 2015 rolled around. Scooter still had a hard time figuring out what to do. For about a year and a half, he tried and sometimes failed to get Justin away from whatever demons he was battling.

“He used to yell and scream at me, and he wanted to put music out, he wanted to tour, but I thought if he did that, he would die. So, I just refused.”

In 2017, Justin cancelled the remaining dates on his Purpose Tour and took a professional hiatus. Scooter says Justin came to him one day and said “I don’t want to be that person anymore.” Scooter adds that Justin’s reformed persona are a direct result of Justin taking responsibility, and wanting to live healthy.

Justin isn’t totally out of the woods and could go back to being a mess. Scooter just has to watch for the warning signs, the most obvious of which would be that Justin starts wearing his hair 2-to-3 inches high again. Scooter, it’s time for an intervention the second you think you lean in for a hug and smell extra-hold mousse.
