Santa Clarita Diet has been renewed. On Wednesday morning, Netflix announced the show – which stars Drew Barrymore and Timothy Olyphant – would return in 2018.
The series first debuted on February 3 to good reviews.
In Santa Clarita Diet, Timothy Olyphant and Drew play Joel and Sheila Hammond, husband-and-wife realtors leading vaguely discontented lives with their teen daughter Abby (Liv Hewson) in suburban Los Angeles.
One day, Sheila suddenly comes down with a strange illness that has her craving human flesh and exhibiting zombie-like symptoms, much to her family’s dismay.
Skyler Gisondo plays Eric Bemis, son of the Hammonds’ neighbor Lisa.
The show’s renewal marks a fantastic comeback for Drew, 42, who in recent years got married, gave birth to two daughters, and went through a divorce.
It also proves a solid return for the series’ showrunnner, filmmaker Ruben Fleischer, who, after catching the zeitgeist with his debut movie Zombieland in 2009, saw his follow-up films 30 Minutes Or Less and Gangster Squad flounder at the box office.
Fleischer, 42, currently has the hit show Superstore on NBC.
Fleischer directed the first two episodes of Santa Clarita Diet.
The single-camera comedy series comes from the offbeat mind of creator Victor Fresco, an Emmy-nominated writer who worked on Mad About You and My Name is Earl.
Fresco was also the show-runner behind the critically acclaimed sitcom Better Off Ted, which ran for two seasons on ABC, and Andy Richter Controls The Universe, the short-lived, Emmy Award-nominated Fox comedy.
Santa Clarita Diet’s starring lead has been on a roll this week.It was just announced on Wednesday morning that Drew will be honored by the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation at its 2017 Gracie Awards.
At the June 6 ceremony, the Riding In Cars With Boys actress will be joined by fellow honorees America Ferrera and Full Frontal comedienne Samantha Bee who also co-writes the smash hit TBS show The Detour with Natalie Zea and Jason Jones.
