Noah Cyrus Talks about Being “Emo,” Admits Struggles with Anxiety and Depression

Noah Cyrus was interviewed for the September issue of L’Officiel Magazine. In the interview, she discusses how she has admitted that her current music is coming from an “emo” place in her personality. And she also admits that her music also reflects struggles that she has had with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Noah credits her brother Trace Cyrus for her attraction to emo elements in music. “[T]his next series of my art and my music is going to be an exploration of a more ‘emo’ side for sure,” Noah says in the interview. “I think that probably stems from growing up with Trace Cyrus in my house because he was the king of emo.”

Her current direction may be influenced by some of the older style emo music, but it’s also driven by Noah’s own mental health challenges and the feelings that have been involved in dealing with those challenges. She says that her current music “is mostly just about how my emotions have been, and about my anxiety, and about how I’ve been struggling with depression, and how it’s okay to feel those feelings.”
